FAA Logistics and Engineering support contract keeps National Airspace System operating smoothly

FAA Logistics and Engineering

S&K Mission Support (SKMS) has been holding a five-year contract to provide logistics and engineering support for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center in Oklahoma City since 2024. Throughout this period, SKMS technicians and planners have worked alongside the FAA Logistics Center (FAALC) to keep the National Airspace System (NAS) operating smoothly—a vital mission that also sustains services for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Forest Service and other federal agencies.

SKMS teams oversee scheduling and maintenance for critical infrastructure, from radar installations and navigation aids to communications systems and airport lighting. By coordinating preventive upkeep and rapid repairs, they help ensure that both commercial and government aircraft can take off, land and cruise with optimal safety and efficiency.

A cornerstone of the contract is the AJW-L Shelter Program, which delivers custom-built enclosures to protect sensitive FAA electronics at sites across the country. SKMS manages design, fabrication and installation of these shelters—each engineered by experienced FAA technicians to meet stringent reliability and performance standards. “I have the privilege of working with a splendid team of logistics and engineering professionals,” says Daniel Skinnell, who leads the program for SKMS. “I watch them knock the ball out of the park every day; I’m proud and grateful to be part of it.”

The shelter program offers three service tiers to match operational needs: fully outfitted “plug-and-play” installations with ongoing maintenance support; pre-wired “ghost installation” units delivered with detailed schematics; and direct-ship shelters accompanied by full documentation and remote assistance. Built from fiberglass, steel and concrete, each unit is designed for a 30-year service life. SKMS complements its in-house capabilities with partnerships involving vendors such as DuPont and operates a dedicated 7,000-square-foot fabrication facility to maintain production quality and delivery schedules.

Since taking on this role, SKMS has reinforced its reputation as a trusted partner of the FAA, demonstrating how private sector expertise can bolster federal aviation missions. As the contract moves into its second year, SKMS remains focused on sustaining airspace safety and reliability for all users of the National Airspace System.
