About the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes
The Flathead Indian Reservation is home to the Salish, Pend d’Oreille, and Kootenai Tribes – collectively known as the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT). Aboriginal territories of the Tribes spanned over 20 million acres of what is now known as western Montana, northern Idaho, and parts of southern Canadian provinces.
When outside pressures and settlement of the west by non-Indians became too great, Tribal leaders negotiated the Treaty of Hellgate which established the Flathead Indian Reservation in 1855. Today, the Flathead Indian Reservation encompasses 1.3 million acres, of which just over 790,000 acres are proudly owned and managed by the Tribes and its members.
The Flathead Reservation is one of the most beautiful areas of the country and boasts a thriving tourism industry, bolstered by activities at Flathead Lake and within the Mission Mountain Range. Close proximity to Glacier National Park means the valley is a popular travel destination as visitors make their way to and from Yellowstone National Park.
One of the most progressive sovereign nations in the United States, the CSKT strive to invest in their people and apply traditional principles and values into all facets of tribal operations and services.
